Oltremé by Tenute Rubino is pure Susumaniello. Also known as Somarello nero, this vine with ancient and mysterious origins is cultivated only in the Brindisi area; It owes its name to the fact that production in the first years of life is extremely generous, so much so that the bunches of weight burden the plant "like a donkey", decreasing with maturity in favor of increasing quality. Despite this and despite a certain resistance to pathogens, the Susumaniello was about to disappear when the Rubino family decided to dedicate a careful recovery project to it and made it its standard-bearer. The company grows it as a sapling in Jaddico, along the Adriatic ridge 8 km north of Brindisi, in a completely dedicated 20-hectare vineyard, which enjoys proximity to the sea and has predominantly sandy soils. Oltremé is a dedication from Luigi to his wife Romina, with whom he has shared the path in the company for a long time. The grapes are harvested by hand at the beginning of October, they ferment and macerate at a controlled temperature, in steel, for about 10 days; the wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation, then ages for 10 months in steel and another 2 in the bottle.
OLTREMÉ SUSUMANIELLO TENUTE RUBINO: TASTING
The Susumaniello Oltremé by Tenute Rubino is dark ruby and concentrated. On the nose it has a profile that ranges from the fruit of black cherry, plum, and blood orange, to the sweet spiciness of cocoa and cinnamon, and even hints of tobacco and smoke. The mouth is fresh, with lively but perfectly integrated tannins, tasty, textural and long. Oltremé is a truly original wine, to be tasted alone first, then accompanied with pasta, sausage and beans.
