In 1984, Philippe Starck and Gérald Mialet decided to create a new design house: XO. In 1996, XO put into production Bubu by Philippe Starck, a stool made of injected polypropylene. An enormous commercial success. XO masters the rich lexicon of ancient carpenters, but confidently speaks several other languages as well; from the technical jargon of printers and plastic injectors to the vernacular of ceramists and metal alchemists. This kaleidoscopic vision of its activities and Starck's unwavering support are the two main components of XO's success. And with large production runs, innovative techniques, and new ways of selling, XO continues to cut through the invisible lines that define the design industry. XO has literally crossed borders. For XO, design is no longer reserved for a European elite.
